Leonard M. Harjo Gains Spot in Runoff Election

Leonard M. Harjo received 452 votes, 37.5% of total votes cast, to lead all candidates for Principal Chief in the General Election held on Saturday, July 11, 2009.  In a tight race for second, Terry Spencer received 237 and Willis Deatherage received 232 votes.  If the preliminary results are allowed to stand as is, then Leonard M. Harjo and Terry Spencer will face each other in a Runoff Election on Saturday, August 8. 

In the race for Assistant Chief, Ella Colman and Cynthia Yerby will also participate in the August 8 Runoff.

Leonard M. Harjo Interview to Air on KGOU's "Indian Times"

Seminole Nation Principal Chief Candidate Leonard M. Harjo recently taped an interview with Susan Shannon, Producer of KGOU's "Indian Times".  The interview will be part of the "Indian Times" program that airs at 6:00 pm on Saturday, June 27 and on Sunday, June 28.

Campaign Enters Final Month

The Leonard M. Harjo for Principal Chief Campaign recently completed a series of Meet the Candidate Events in Dallas, Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Shawnee.  We express our sincere appreciation to Tribal Members who attended and hosted the events.  A special thank you to our Urban Inter-Tribal Center of Texas and the Oklahoma City Muscogee (Creek) Association for graciously allowing to use their facilities for local events. 

As we move into the final month, Campaign activities will concentrate more on the Seminole County area.  Don't be surprised if we call or drop by for a brief visit. 

The Leonard M. Harjo for Principal Chief Campaign Rally & Hog Fry is scheduled for 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm on Friday, July 3, 2009 at the Mekusukey Mission.  Show your support and join us for an evening of fun.  Event activities include entertainment, a silent auction, and the drawings for the the winners of the Remembrance Dress and Beaded Crown Set raffles.  Dinner begins at 7:00 pm--first come, first served.  Bring your family, friends, and lawn chairs.

National Child Abuse Prevention Month

April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month and a number of communities in Central Oklahoma held Child Abuse Awareness activities.  Principal Chief Candidate Leonard M. Harjo attended Pottawatomie County's "Paint the Town Blue" event in Shawnee.  "Children are the gift of the Creator to our people,"  Harjo said.  "The Seminole Nation must make every effort to eliminate this problem within our community."



Dignitaries attending the event included Seminole Tribal Member Holly Renae Factor, who performed the Lord's Prayer in sign language;
and Lt. Governor Jeri Askins, keynote speaker for the event.

 

Candidate Attends Yale Alumni In Energy Conference

Principal Chief Candidate Leonard M. Harjo, Yale School of Management Class of 1988, was among the ninety Yale University Alumni who attended the First Yale Alumni in Energy Conference in New Haven, Connecticut on March 27, 2009. 

"The Seminole Nation has a long history with the oil and gas segments of the energy industry,"  Harjo said.  "One of the keys to our economic future may be untapped conventional and alternate resources present in Seminole County.  This was a great opportunity to introduce or re-introduce myself to fellow alumni who might be able to help us reach our economic development goals."

The conference focused on a wide range of energy issues from energy policy, to alternate energy project development, to cutting edge scientific research.
